George Clinton’s Free The Funk movement and Flashlight 2013 Campaign aim to shed the light on legal malpractices in the music industry and act as advocates to raise public awareness around protecting the rights and copyrights of artists and musicians.

California based MC/ activist, Unity Lewis, has joined forces with George Clinton, along with Sly Stone, Bebe and Amuka to bring you the anthem for this movement, entitled “FREE THE FUNK.” The purpose behind the release of this song, music video and movement is to help Dr. George Clinton attain the Legacy he seeks, while at the same time assisting hundreds of others to seek the justice they deserve.

“I (George Clinton) want to be known as the man who brought to the attention of America the copyright issues. That’s what I would like my legacy to be, to have turned people on too the fact that they need to fight for their rights to their music. You have to fight a lot of people for your music. You have to fight the copyright companies, like BMI. You have to fight these record companies because they really want to take it all. Right now, it’s time for people to start getting their music back. From about 1978 to 2013, the first thirty-five years, is the timeframe from which you’re allowed to get your music back. In 2013, this will be the first time a lot of people are going to get their music back and I’m going to help them! WE WILL WIN!”

-George Clinton

“Putting together the song ‘Free The Funk’ was an amazing experience in itself. Not only was I able to get back in the studio with George Clinton, but Sonny Cool also put me in contact with Sly Stone’s manager Bebe, who in turn connected me with Sly Stone. Sly was enthusiastic about being featured on ‘Free The Funk’ with his long time friend George Clinton. The subject matter struck a chord with Sly, as he was in a legal battle for his rights and the music that had been stolen from him. After James Brown, Sly Stone holds the title of having the second most sampled song of all time, ‘Sing A Simple Song.’ He is the 4th most sampled artist of all time, after James Brown, Kool and the Gang and Parliament. Yet at that time he was barely receiving a penny of the royalties and income that was truly being generated from his music being played on radio, television and by various forms of media internationally everyday. Sly advocates for the rights of his good friend George Clinton, who continues to fight for his due royalties and just deserves. The purpose behind the release of this song and the Free The Funk Movement is to help Dr. George Clinton attain the Legacy he seeks, while at the same time assisting hundreds of others to seek the justice they deserve.”

Free The Funk Lyrics

Free The Funk Song Lyrics

Introduction (Amuka)-

Free up the funk…

Yea…

Hook 1 (Amuka)-

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

I’m not a fool. You see we ain’t no punks.

We bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

All of my people pound this beat in your trunk.

Until we make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

They in court popping all that junk,

but we bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

They know they shady but they owe us a chunk.

So we bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

Verse 1 (Unity Lewis)-

Welcome to the shadiest business on the whole planet

Where the artists and creators ain’t paid and taken for granted.

Taken advantage of, shown no love, poorly managed,

and the ones you think you tight with will do you the most damage.

Parasitic culture controlled by vultures and slave drivers.

Our greatest thinkers and writers been swindled by these connivers.

Especially the musicians that use they gift to unite us.

They like to see us erased ‘cause they conspire to divide us.

So they blight us, steal our wealth,

give the credit to they self.

Put our money in they pocket and a plaque up on they shelf.

Try and jack your royalties and catalogue then give you back talk.

Wanna see you dead broke, stranded on a crack rock.

In court fighting. Won’t settle for the scraps.

Won’t let ‘em jack an inch of funk. We gotta get it all back,

to the hands of the man that’s the foundation of the track.

You tried to forge and fake the funk but now the funk is on attack!

Bring it back!

Hook 2 (Amuka)-

I’m not a fool. You see we ain’t no punks.

We bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

All of my people pound this beat in your trunk.

Until we make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

They in court popping all that junk,

but we bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

They know they shady but they owe us a chunk.

So we bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

Verse 2 (Sly Stone)-

Way’d up.

Make sure you’re laid up.

That’s when you fade up,

instead of down.

Level way up.

Make sure you’re laid up.

That’s when you fade up,

instead of down.

(Bebe)-

Snippets and songs and samples and loops,

stolen by lawyers and managers in suits.

Cut and paste, signatures replaced,

changing the outcome of a litigating case.

Smile in your face and a simultaneous pat and a stab in the back

by those who we trusted not to do just that.

FREE THE FUNK!

The expression of the existence of self

now returned to the thrown of those who hold the rhythm of the one.

Hook 3 (Amuka)-

I’m not a fool. You see we ain’t no punks.

We bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

All of my people pound this beat in your trunk.

Until we make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

They in court popping all that junk,

but we bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

They know they shady but they owe us a chunk.

So we bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

Verse 3 (George Clinton)-

Tracking and backtracking.

Turn around and tracking back.

Jacking. Track jacking.

Out in the jack yard tracking off.

Out in the jack yard backing off.

You had tee many martoonies.

But you ain’t as drunk, you ain’t as think as you

drunk I am.

I  ain’t as think as you drunk I am.

You got a speech impediment in your penmanship.

Put your names on the contract but you ain’t write shit.

A speech impediment in your penmanship.

You got a lisping body language.

You stutter in sign language.

Talking shit in ESP.

Hook 4 (Amuka)-

I’m not a fool. You see we ain’t no punks.

We bout to make ‘em free up the funk!

FREE UP THE FUNK!!!

All of my people pound this beat in your trunk.

Free The Funk The Music Video

About the “Free The Funk” the Music Video

“To complete this project I reunited with George Clinton and P-FUNK in Oakland to film the Free The Funk music video. I brought along with me Trevor Parham to direct, David Gilbert as director of photography, and a talented cast of actors, dancers, models and performing artists. My role was that of the producer and editor. Completing this video fulfilled my dream of seeing this song and vision come to life. The final part of the realization process now is to release it and share it with you! I hope you will help us Free The Funk!”
